Current status: Widowed, retired and living in Bristol

Joan's mother died when she was two, so she was looked after by her deaf grandmother for a while then taken to Bristol to be looked after by other family members. She went on to become a nursing sister at Southmead Hospital during and after the war then, once the children were old enough, she worked part time in family planning before retiring.
